Background explanation

Animators Inc. / Anita Blake Puddu's Site was the biggest Italian community about Anita Blake, opened by Puddu in 2007. The old website has now been closed for some years (since 2015), and after a lot of "wouldn't it be beautiful if our terrific fanfiction were still online?", its members finally decided to find a new home for their works, to keep the material available for their own comfortable use and for the enjoyment of the masses.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Puddu, Flora and Rubina to import Animators Inc. into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfiction currently in Animators Inc. will be hosted on the OTW's servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from Animators Inc. to the AO3 after March.

What does this mean for creators who have work(s) on Animators Inc.?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We'll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will invite it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors. We will then permanently close down the site.

Please contact Open Doors with your Animators Inc. pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

1. You'd like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3.
5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your Animators Inc. account, please contact Open Doors and we'll help you out. I. INTERNATIONAL FANWORKS DAY

Thanks to everyone who participated in our eighth annual International Fanworks Day this past February 15! Communications kicked off celebrations with a remix fanworks challenge, Feedback Fest, and Discord games and chat, and the festivities continued through the end of the week with Fanlore's IFD Fanlore Challenge, which involved different editing challenges every day. Thanks to the OTW volunteers who helped mod the chat! You can find the fan-written lyrics generated during Lyrics Round Robin on the OTWCommunications_IFD AO3 account.

II. AT THE AO3

Accessibility, Design & Technology introduced a new preference to disallow gift works from other users, as well as a host of bug fixes and performance improvements. AD&T has also been working closely with Translation on internationalization efforts and with Policy & Abuse on anti-harassment measures. Meanwhile, Open Doors completed the manual import of The Croft Codex, a Tomb Raider fanfiction archive.

Policy & Abuse received 3,100 tickets in January, a slight increase from the average, while Support's ticket numbers are about on par with those from 2021. Both teams look forward to starting recruitment again soon to help with these tickets.

In January, Tag Wrangling handled more than 540,000 new tags--a rate of more than 1,100 per active wrangler! In other news, in order to try to avoid potential confusion with an upcoming television show, wranglers had to take the very unusual step of turning off wrangling for several hours in order for Tag Wrangling Supervisors to rename the oldest -- and one of the largest! -- fandom tags in the Archive to a less ambiguous format. We hope all users enjoy the freshly disambiguated Supernatural (TV 2005) fandom tag.

III. ELSEWHERE AT THE OTW

February was a very busy month for Legal! Legal committee members submitted a comment to the Hong Kong Government in response to its call for input regarding changes to its Copyright Ordinance. Enormous thanks to the many Hongkongers who wrote with their stories in response to Legal's invitation! Legal also worked with Communications to make a public post about three current U.S. legal issues to watch. On one of those issues—-the U.S. Copyright Office’s process for considering Technological Protection Measures—-Legal committee member Rebecca Tushnet participated directly in the Copyright Office roundtable on behalf of OTW, and Legal will be continuing to participate as things develop.

Systems has started its hardware purchasing for 2022, while TWC is readying No. 37, "Fandom Histories," guest edited by Philipp Dominik Keidl and Abby Waysdorf, to be released on March 15, 2022. TWC's new editors, Mel Stanfill & Poe Johnson, have updated article types and word-length guidelines. Communications has also updated the OTW's press graphics, which you can find on the OTW website, to include statistics through the end of 2021.

IV. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE PEEPS

From 24 January to 24 February, Volunteers & Recruiting received 103 new requests, and completed 96, leaving us with 23 open requests (including induction and removal tasks listed below).

Policy & Abuse Volunteers

The AO3 Policy & Abuse Committee is dedicated to helping users deal with the various situations that may arise. We also handle any complaints that come in about content uploaded to the Archive of Our Own. The team determines if complaints are about legitimate violations of the Terms of Service, and what to do about them if they are; our major goals are to adhere to the TOS, to make our reasoning and processes as clear and transparent as possible, and to keep every individual case completely confidential. We work closely with other AO3 related committees such as Support.

We are seeking people who are self-motivated, are patient in rephrasing explanations, can make and document decisions, cooperate within and outside of their team, and ask for help when it's needed. Volunteers need to be able to handle complex and sometimes-disturbing content, and must be able to commit a sufficient amount of time to the team on a regular basis.

Policy & Abuse volunteers are required to spend a considerable amount of time training for this role, and to regularly put in at least several hours a week performing various committee tasks. Please be sure you can handle the workload before applying.

The Library of Moria, a Tolkien slash, femslash, gen, and RPF fanfiction and fanart archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

Background explanation

The Library of Moria was founded in 2002 as one of the first Lord of the Rings archives, but quickly grew in scope and popularity. The archivists have lovingly kept the Library of Moria running for nearly two decades, but with the announcement that the eFiction software that runs the archive will not be updated, they realize it is only a matter of time before the archive is rendered unusable. They are moving the archive to the AO3 to ensure that it stays online for all of those who have enjoyed it over the years to revisit for decades more.

Every month or so the OTW will be doing a Q&A with one of its volunteers about their experiences in the organization. The posts express each volunteer's personal views and do not necessarily reflect the views of the OTW or constitute OTW policy. Today's post is with Akima Ras, who volunteers as a Translation volunteer for Team Persian.

How does what you do as a volunteer fit into what the OTW does?

One of the missions of the OTW is to make fannish content and community more accessible for people around the world. By volunteering as a translator for Team Persian, and the Translation Committee as a whole, I believe that we’re helping to make everything feel easier and simpler to use. In the future, it can become a space that might feel closer to home for those who, for a variety of reasons, don’t or can’t live in their home countries anymore. Aside from that, I’m also a staffling for our Webs Committee, who fights WordPress alongside other Webs staff to maintain OTW’s website and tries to get it to behave when other committees need technical assistance.

What is a typical week like for you as a volunteer?

Due to my mostly nonexistent schedule, I don’t really have a typical week. When I actually manage to sit down unbothered behind my laptop, in the early hours of the morning, I tackle a variety of responsibilities based on my mood and how nigh the due date is. It’s usually the translation task I’m assigned, followed by doc managing ones collecting dust 90% of the time. That means preparing around three or so dozen docs for translation, which can sometimes seem like a daunting project to tackle. To mix things up sometimes, I check OTW’s main website and its relatives to see if they require updates, then switch to our internal task boards to do some housekeeping.

What made you decide to volunteer?

It seems like such a long time ago, [laughs], but when I first decided to volunteer, I actually noticed the recruitment post on AO3 for the very first time. I usually didn’t pay that part of the page much heed, and if I did, it was no more than a cursory glance, but for some reason, it caught my eye that time, and I clicked the link. That somehow led me to the Translation Committee world map, and I noticed that there are no peeps from my country nor any who translate from English to Persian.

That was the reason. The realization that it felt like giving back to the community that had given so much to me, in a way, came later. In the beginning, seeing that map and noticing that there was no team Persian somehow made me wonder if OTW would want to have their site translated to my mother tongue. I contacted our Volunteers & Recruitment Committee, I assume, asking if they would be interested in that, and to my utmost surprise— because there were no translator recruitments back then — they said yes. And the rest, as they say, is history.

What has been your biggest challenge doing work for the OTW?

Actually, the experience has been so new, exciting, and rewarding that I can’t come up with a response for this one. I mean, I can talk about how difficult it is to find the equivalent of pinch-hitter (a term for a stand-in writer in challenges) in the Persian language (there are none); or I can talk about the untamable navigation menus of OTW’s website which, regardless of one’s tinkering method, remain three lines long and overflowing with random pages with long, long names. But it’s all part of volunteering for OTW.

P.S. In hindsight, maybe the latter can actually qualify as a challenge. Those hours and days that I believed that I had broken the site by fixing the ones for our three or so dozen languages were very stressful.

What fannish things do you like to do?

I’ve always loved stories and books, so reading fanfiction is a favorite pastime. I’m also an avid consumer of fanart on Tumblr and Deviant Art, and fanvids from the fandoms I’m interested in. That said, whenever my muses grace me with their presence, and real life allows, I write fics to give back to the fandom, appreciate other writers, give gifts to friends, and pen stories that I’d like to read.

OTW Legal is tracking and participating in three current developments in U.S. law that could affect fans: (1) Fan-unfriendly proposals to change trademark law; (2) Attacks on LGBTQ+ expression online; and (3) Proposals to mandate technological copyright filtering on the Internet. We will keep advocating for fans in these areas, and in some cases, there are things you can do if you’re in the U.S.! If you want to know more, read on.

(1) Fan-Unfriendly Proposals to Change Trademark Law

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed a bill with the misleading name of “SHOP SAFE” that would place barriers and restrictions on online marketplaces, including the sorts of marketplaces that fans rely on, like eBay, Etsy, Kickstarter, Patreon, Redbubble, TeePublic, and many others. Although this bill is presented as being about “consumer protection,” that’s not really what it accomplishes – instead, it would reverse long-standing principles of trademark law, would give enormous power to trademark owners to take down fan material from e-commerce sites, and would even force e-commerce sites to try to filter out fan material before it even gets posted. It would harm markets for memorabilia, resale, fanart, and more. Although the OTW is focused on noncommercial fanworks, and this law wouldn’t affect the AO3 (which does not do any commerce at all), it would be terrible for fans on other sites.

Although SHOP SAFE has passed in the House, it is still pending in the Senate. The OTW is actively participating in direct efforts to explain to Senators why this bill would do more harm than good. If you’re in the U.S., you can help by contacting your Senators to do the same! One way to contact your senators is using the EFF’s e-mail tool.

(2) Attacks on LGBTQ+ expression online

We have heard from a lot of members about the (again, terribly mis-named) EARN IT Act, which has been introduced by the Senate Judiciary Committee. This bill, like SHOP SAFE, claims to do one thing, but actually does something very different. On its face, EARN-IT appears to be about curbing the availability of visually-depicted Child Sexual Abuse Material (“CSAM”) online – and if it were actually a tool for doing that, we would support it. AO3 bans the posting or embedding of CSAM (photos of actual children), and bans users for posting such material.

So why does the OTW care? Because EARN-IT is an attack on section 230, which is the law that makes online platforms able to host user-posted material, and it does so in a way that allows U.S. states – many of which can be influenced by powerful anti-LGBTQ+ lobbying groups – to define what constitutes a visual depiction of CSAM. It is also a massive attack on Internet user privacy, that could result in users’ private material being searched. This sort of legal change could have dramatic impacts on fans, fanart, and freedom of expression for LGBTQ+ youth.

EARN-IT would not affect the AO3 directly. EARN-IT is specifically and explicitly limited to visual depictions, and AO3 does not host any visual depictions at all — the only user-posted material that AO3 hosts is text-only. Any and all images visible on AO3 are hosted elsewhere and embedded by users in works. EARN-IT would therefore affect those platforms where the images are actually hosted, not AO3, where the images merely appear as the result of embedding links (the technological difference matters for this bill).

However, the implications of the legislation for fan communities mean that the OTW is monitoring the situation closely, and will take direct action based on how things develop. If you want to get involved yourself, the best way to do so is through our allies at the EFF, which is also monitoring closely and organizing user action. (3) Proposals to mandate technological copyright filtering on the Internet

The U.S. Copyright Office is convening roundtables to explore the imposition of “Standard Technical Measures,” which could require online platforms — like the AO3 — to engage in filtering. Filtering could require platforms to attempt to prevent the uploading of copyrighted material, or monitor or search their networks for copyrighted material — things that do not account well for the sorts of fair uses that fans and AO3 rely on. OTW has long stood against copyright filtering, which is not only harmful to free expression, but also technologically impossible. We have submitted many comments over the years opposing proposals like those contemplated by the Copyright Office, and on February 22, 2022, Legal Committee Member Rebecca Tushnet participated on the OTW’s behalf in this most recent round. We will continue to fight this fight, and will keep you informed as things develop!

The EFF links above also include pointers to email forms that fans in the U.S. can use to contact their representatives to urge them to take a stance against SHOP SAFE and EARN IT.

Another International Fanworks Day has gone by and once again, we at the Organization for Transformative Works are grateful for the enthusiasm and participation of our visitors. IFD is all about celebrating the creativity of the fandom community and it was on full display this year!

The theme for #IFD2022 was Fandom Classics, and we encouraged you to post remixes of or tributes to classic fanworks as well as to to recommend your favorite fandom classics in our Feedback Fest. We're blown away by the number of recommendations we received: easily enough fanworks to keep us busy until IFD 2023.

We'd also like to thank everybody who participated in our chatroom games marathon, which ran from 21.00 UTC on February 14 until 03.00 UTC on February 16. Once again, we hosted the games on our dedicated Discord server and our volunteer moderators were entertained, amused, and impressed by the cheerful enthusiasm of everybody who participated (including the very many people who chose to play games instead of sleeping - we're sorry!). As usual, the fandom songs produced in the Lyrics Round Robin game rounds can be found at our dedicated IFD AO3 account.

Hurray! It’s International Fanworks Day, our annual opportunity to celebrate all things fanworks and fandom. About the IFD games session

The OTW’s chatroom games session is a 30-hour party that lasts from 21.00 UTC on 14 February until 03.00 UTC on 16 February. The times listed below are in UTC, but you can click the time to find out how that converts to your own timezone.

Game Guidelines

5 Things
How to Play: During this game, the host will name a topic and players in the room will call out examples from their favorite fandoms. This will repeat for at least 5 rounds. Be prepared to explain why your answer counts (maybe you’ll recruit someone new to your fandom!)

Lyrics Round Robin
How to Play: During this game, we’ll collectively write FANDOM lyrics to replace those of a familiar song. The host will choose the song and type out an alternate first two lines. Then those in the room will write the next lines until the song is finished.

That’s Life
How to Play: This is an RP game. Participants will first name a character that they know well for each round. Every round will consist of two random questions posted by the moderator. Participants share how the character they chose for that round would answer the questions as if answering from their point of view. For each round, participants will name a different character to answer the new questions.

Trivia
How to Play: Like most trivia games, the host will ask a question and the first person to answer correctly wins that round. Because we’re online and you’re free to do searches we’re going to add another factor, which is time — you must answer within 3 minutes. But you can call out your answer as soon as you think you know. If you have the correct answer, the host will type your name and award you a point. At the end of the game, whoever has gotten the most points will be named the winner!

20 Questions
How to Play: The host will think of a person, place or thing. Your task is to guess what it is. The first person in the room roster (on the upper right side) gets to ask a question that the host will answer with a YES or NO. As soon as the host replies, the next person on the list can ask their question. Players can call out a guess at any time but the host will only answer if it’s correct so that the next person gets their turn. The game will continue until someone has guessed the person, place or thing.

List Builder
How to Play: List Builder is a collaborative game in which players work together to come up with a list of items belonging to a particular genre, starting with consecutive letters of the alphabet. Start at A and work your way through to Z (you can be as flexible as required on the difficult letters!)

Linkee
How to Play: The host will read a clue and each player should guess (to themselves — shhh!) what the answer is that fits into the [BLANK]. The host will then read 2 more clues. After each one, players can call out a guess about what they think links the clues together. The first person to guess correctly gets a point. When we have completed all clue sets, the person with the most points wins.
